Overview

>>2016

Berserk is a unique 3 day residential creative conference for children between the age group of 8-14years. It aims to raise the artistic capabilities of a child to a whole new level. Categorized under the four art verticals- Theatre, Dance, Music and Visual Art, this is enabled by a select panel of mentors who are accomplished experts in their respective creative fields.

Recognised as one of India’s premier art festivals, the organisers of Art Bengaluru realised the need for such an initiative and took it upon themselves to create Berserk. The idea was to build awareness at a nascent stage, where a child’s interest in art could be nurtured through its basics and other nuances. It aimed to give children the self-confidence to express themselves without being restrained by conventional expectations. It also provides them with invaluable opportunity to interact and learn from the masters in their respective fields.

Berserk’s inaugural edition, held in the year 2013, witnessed 3000 students from 15 schools audition to take part in the 3-Day residential conference. Since then Berserk has gone national and auditioned over 8000 students from schools and cultural academies across the country. Berserk 2016 is joined by Anita Mithra for Theatre; Mayuri Upadhya for Dance; Jeremy Woodruff for Music and Rajshekhar Narayan for Visual art & Design

This conference is designed to cater to state of the art facilitation by the best in the art industry to motivate inspire and educate children to hone their creative talents to a whole new level.

Berserk has gone on to help the children attain benchmark achievements through the scholarships awarded from conceptualization of music albums to representing the country in the International dance world cup. From staging of theatre productions to showcasing their first ever art show. Berserk has alos added an array of International awards to its credit.

This year we have a whole new panel of experts designing the conference and the students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology putting together the decor of the conference.

Abinav Sridharan started learning Carnatic music from the age of four under the tutelage of his mother, Dr. Padmasini Sridharan. After few years of training, he was given the opportunity to work with Mr. Abhaswaram Ramjhi, who first introduced Abinav on stage as a professional singer. Abinav has also been a part of A.R. Rahman’s Kids Choir, and has sung in numerous movies and concerts for Dr. Rahman. His interest and curiosity in learning Hindustani Classical music led him to become a disciple of Ustad Ghulam Akbar Khan of Rampur Sahaswan Gharana and Abinav is presently a part of the eighth generation of Gharana. Being a regular performer on stage from the age of eleven, he has presented concerts in genres ranging from Carnatic and Hindustani Classical music to Indian and Western Classical Art songs and Opera.

While doing his Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Abinav continued learning Hindustani Classical music and was enthralled by the scope that this genre offered to his artistic side. Joining KM Music Conservatory in the year 2008 gave him the opportunity to get formally trained in operatic singing too. The following year, he became a part of KM Sufi Qawwali Ensemble and has performed in several concerts as the lead singer of the ensemble, which specializes in delivering Sufi Qawwalis in a unique musical style while keeping the traditional elements intact. KMMC recognized his abilities in Western music and appointed him as a student-tutor for the Western Vocal course in the conservatory, where he taught students of all ages, for three years alongside his studies. He is the first recipient of both, the ‘Best Hindustani Music Performer’ award (2008-09) and ‘Best Student Performer’ (2010-12) cash prize from KM Music Conservatory. Recognized by Middlesex University for merit, Abinav was also awarded the ‘A.R. Rahman Scholarship’ for his Bachelor studies in London (2012-13). Recently, he was also awarded the King’s India Masters Scholarship for his Ethnomusicology studies at King’s College, London, which he is currently pursuing.

Abinav strongly believes that learning the techniques and languages of Western music performance has helped him significantly in the performance of Indian Classical music. Making use of the opportunity of meeting and studying with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds, Abinav and few of his friends started a band, Niche, which performs Indian and Western Classical music, coupled with folk songs from different states of India. This was the first band to be started by the students of KM Music Conservatory. During his studies in London, Abinav also started a new venture called Opera India. This aims at making Western Classical music comprehensible to the Indian audience and Indian Classical music comprehensible to the audience of the world. This is done through amalgamating the text and music of these genres to create a unique performance.

Between the years 2009-2015, Abinav has performed in various concerts, notably, the opera ‘Si J’etai Roi’ by Adolph Adam, conducted by The Neemrana Group in the year 2010, been a part of KM Chamber Choir, which toured India and Germany with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra. He was also featured in the Oprah Winfrey show along with the KM Sufi Ensemble in the year 2012. Later in 2012, he has appeared in interviews and performances in BBC News Channel, London. During his stay in the UK, Abinav (with Opera India) has performed for various organizations throughout the country, notably, the WaterAid Foundation and Magdala Opera Company, where he has performed Indian and Western Classical music genres with renowned singers from the La Scala Opera House.

Abinav Sridharan completed his graduate studies with Distinction in Vocal Music Performance from Middlesex University, London (2013) and started working at KM Music Conservatory, where, apart from teaching Western Classical and Indian Classical vocal performance, he also started a new course that blended these two genres in the interest of creating an easier and effective methodology of learning for the students. During his three years of teaching, he has produced and directed numerous concerts and mini-operas with his students of ages ranging from four to fifty. Today, many of his students have taken up full-time music education or are popular names in the Indian film and independent music field.
